What Is the Year Card
The Major Arcana theme of your personal year
What Is the Year Card
Every year of your life carries a Major Arcana as its quiet companion. Mary K. Greer calls it the Year Card — sometimes the growth card — because it names the lesson, the flavour and the invitation of your personal year. It is not a fixed fate stamped onto you. It is a theme: the archetype you are learning to dance with from one birthday to the next.
How to find it
The method is the same reducing you already know, with one small twist. Instead of your birth year, you use the current calendar year.
- Take your birth month (as a number) and your birth day.
- Add them to the year whose card you want to find.
- Reduce the total to a number between 1 and 22 by adding its digits.
That final number is a Major Arcana — your Year Card.
A worked example
Imagine someone born on 7 April. April is month 4; the day is 7. To find their card for 2026:
4 + 7 + 2026 = 2037
2 + 0 + 3 + 7 = 12
Twelve is The Hanged Man — a year of pause, of seeing things from a new angle, of surrender rather than force. That is the tone their 2026 is invited to explore.
Birthday to birthday
The Year Card runs from one birthday to the next, not from January to December. If this year's birthday hasn't arrived yet, you are technically still living last year's card; once you blow out the candles, the new card takes over. Some readers feel the shift a few weeks early, like a season turning — trust your own timing.
A theme, never a sentence
The most important thing to hold lightly: your Year Card describes a classroom, not a verdict. A Tower year is not a year of disaster; it is a year that favours honesty and clearing away what no longer holds. A Sun year does not guarantee happiness; it invites you to let your warmth be seen. The card sets the curriculum. How you study it is entirely yours.
Keep this card somewhere you will see it. As the months pass, you will notice its questions echoing back to you — and that recognition is where the real learning begins.
