How Reduction Works

Turning a birth date into a card

Turning a date into a card

Reduction is the small piece of arithmetic that makes Personal Tarot work. The idea: take a number, add its digits together, and repeat until the result sits in the range you want. Nothing more.

Let us walk a real example — a birth date of 7 April 1969 (written 7 / 4 / 1969):

  1. Add the parts of the date: 7 + 4 + 1969 = 1980.
  2. Now add the digits of that total: 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18.

Eighteen is our first result. In this system we keep reducing until we land between 1 and 22, because that is the range of the Major Arcana. 18 is already inside it, so 18 — The Moon — is this person's Personality card.

Why 1 to 22, not 1 to 9

Ordinary numerology reduces all the way to a single digit (1–9). Personal Tarot stops earlier, at 22, so that each result names a specific Major Arcanum. If your first reduction gives a number from 1 to 22, you keep it. If it gives something larger — say 23 or higher — you reduce once more.

The Soul card is found by taking your Personality number and reducing it to a single digit (1–9). If your Personality card is 18, then 1 + 8 = 9, The Hermit — the Soul card beneath the Moon. When Personality and Soul are the same single digit, you have one card doing both jobs.

The Fool is 22

One convention to fix in mind. The Fool is numbered 0 on the card — but in this counting we treat it as 22 (0 and 22 are read as the same station, the journey's open end). So a reduction that lands on 22 gives you The Fool, and totals reduce into the 1–22 band rather than collapsing 22 to a plain 4. This keeps every Major Arcanum reachable and lets The Fool close and reopen the circle.

Practise once

Try it with any date: add day, month and full year; add the digits of that sum; check you are between 1 and 22; reduce again only if you overshoot. In the next section the calculator does this for you — but doing it once by hand is how the method stops being magic and becomes something you own.
