What is Personal Tarot?

The deck as a map of your life

A map of a life, not of a question

Most people first meet tarot as a way to ask a question: What should I do? What is coming? Personal Tarot begins somewhere quieter. Instead of shuffling for an answer, it treats the 78 cards as a stable map — and asks where you already stand on it.

The idea is simple and old. Every deck contains the same archetypes: the same Magician, the same Star, the same Tower. If those images describe universal human experiences, then your own life must run through some of them more than others. Personal Tarot is the practice of finding which cards are woven into who you are — and reading them not as fortune, but as self-knowledge.

Mary Greer's contribution

The modern form of this practice was shaped by Mary K. Greer, whose Tarot for Your Self (1984) turned tarot from something done to a querent into something done by them. Greer later gathered the birth-card method in Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011), building on the patterns she first mapped in Tarot Constellations (1987).

Her core move: take your birth date, add its numbers, and reduce them. The result points to one or two Major Arcana — your Personality and Soul cards. These are not cards you drew by chance; they are calculated, fixed, and yours for life. They describe the lens through which you meet the world and the deeper current running beneath it.

What this course does

Over the coming lessons you will:

  • learn the small numerology you need (the numbers 1–9);
  • see the 22 Major Arcana as a single journey;
  • calculate your own Personality, Soul and Year cards;
  • and read what they say about your gifts and your growing edges.

None of this replaces an intuitive reading with the cards in your hands. Think of it instead as the baseline — the part of the tarot that does not change from one shuffle to the next. Once you know your own cards, every spread you draw lands against a background you understand.

A gentle caution before we start: these cards are a mirror, not a verdict. They open questions about who you are; they never close them. Hold them lightly, and let them show you something true.
